My studio, Stone Carver Designs, is located within 2 miles of the memorial. It was here that all the black granite panels were taken to have the photos etched, the maps and all the text sandblasted into the polished faces. They were then taken to the site and installed in their permanent home.

As a citizen of Irving since 1980, I am incredibly honored to have been chosen to do the work on the granite for this memorial. When I first heard about the project in 2004 during Phase One, I was hopeful that I would somehow get to be a part of it. My dad was a veteran and had passed in 2002, so I was very moved by the idea of getting involved. I got to do the large sandstone slab that was placed in the park that listed the companies that had a hand in the construction of Phase One.

So, to have been able to do the photo etching work, the lettering and maps on the main plaza walls in Phase Two was a dream come true. The experience of carving the 80 names into the three large black granite panels that replaced the temporary ones in the Memorial Wall was quite humbling. I am proud to have contributed this blog in recognition and in memory of the many veterans who gave so much so all of us could enjoy the freedom that we have, and I, for one, will never take this privilege for granted.
